Some 22,000 fresh students have been admitted to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST.

The students will pursue various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University.

Speaking during a matriculation ceremony to formally usher some fresh students from the College of Agriculture and natural resources into the school, the provost of the college, Prof. Steve Amissah stated that in total, as at the time of matriculation, 22,011 students comprising of undergraduates and postgraduates had been registered including distance and regular students.

According to him, 56,548 persons applied out of which 43,877 qualified.

Out of the total number of persons who qualified, 22,011 have been offered admission and have registered.

“KNUST, as you are aware, is the most competitive across all the public universities in Ghana due to the variety and demand-driven nature of the programmes we offer. In total, 56,548 people applied for admission this year. Out of this number, 43,877 qualified. We have however been able to register only 22,011 undergraduate and postgraduate students constituting about 4% increase over last year’s figures. This is made up of 13,189 males and 8,822 females”.

Last year, 16,888 students were admitted out of the total of the 36,818 who qualified.

Prof. Steve Amissah further stated that the University is on course in its agenda of promoting female education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM.

“The Vice-Chancellor’s initiative to increase females in the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is yielding fruits. We were able to increase female admission this year by 827 which represents 40% female population’’.
