Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has confirmed a shooting incident at a funeral in Obuasi that left the Adansi Dompoase chief injured.
In a statement shared on social media, the Minister said the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council received a briefing indicating that the incident occurred on Saturday, 29 November, during a funeral ceremony where a firearm was discharged, injuring Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, the Adanse Dompoasehene.
According to him, “The Police intervened promptly and arrested the suspect, a 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with ongoing investigations.”
“The victim received medical care and has been discharged home,” he added.
The Minister used the opportunity to reiterate the Minister of Interior’s temporary ban on the use of firearms during funerals and traditional gatherings.
“This incident reinforces the importance of the temporary ban imposed by the interior ministry on the use of firearms during funerals and traditional gatherings across the country. The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere. Adherence to this directive is essential for maintaining order and safeguarding the well-being of all attendees.”
