The two policemen who escaped and were re-arrested for the failed robbery of GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo in the Afram Plains area of the Eastern Region have been remanded by an Accra Magistrate Court.

The two, Corporal Elvis Mensah and Lance Corporal Daniel Kissi,  were arrested following their attempted robbery which led to the death of the van driver, David Kofi Sarpong, aged 52, but escaped a day later when they were being transported to the Eastern regional Police command in Koforidua.

They were later re-arrested, transported to Accra and have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, and murder.

Their escape led to clashes between the police and angry residents in the Afram Plains area, who alleged that the Police allowed the suspects to escape and went on rampage destroying police property and threatening the lives of police officers.

The vandalism led the Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor to announced a withdrawal of police personnel from the area until the residents help to fix the vandalised stations.
