President Nana Akufo-Addo has lambasted the reported slave trade in Libya describing it as "gross and scandalous abuses of human rights".

In a tweet on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, the President reacted to the situation saying that it is a mockery of the bond that binds African countries together.

"The current slave auctions of Africans in Libya are not only gross and scandalous abuses of human rights but are also mockeries of the alleged solidarity of African nations grouped in the African Union (AU), of which Libya is a member.", he tweeted.

The AU expressed outrage after a CNN footage emerged appearing to show slave markets in Libya. Youths from Niger and other sub-Saharan countries were seen being sold to buyers for about $400 (£300) at undisclosed locations in Libya.

In April, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it had gathered evidence of slavery in Libya. Smugglers hold migrants for ransom and if their families could not pay, they were sold off at different prices depending on their qualifications, an IOM official in Libya said.

The President in his recent visit to the UK urged Ghanaian youth to avoid dangerous migrations to search for greener pastures because opportunities are being created to their benefit.

“I know there will always be those among us who would want to try and seek their fortunes in foreign lands. We would wish them well and pray that they are treated with dignity wherever they go, but it should never be because there are no opportunities in Ghana,” he said.
