The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced the provision of two boreholes for residents of the Chorkor Electoral Area in the Ablekuma South area to help address its water challenges.
The intervention, according to the Mayor, was expected to provide a more reliable source of water for residents, while the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will arrange an interim water supply every two days to the communities in the area pending the completion of the boreholes.
The Mayor disclosed this during a Community Dialogue on Social Protection and Social Issues organised by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection at Saban Park, Chemuenaa Last Stop, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after residents raised concerns over persistent challenges in accessing potable water.
The Mayor asked community members and local leaders to identify suitable locations where the boreholes could be drilled, assuring them that the Assembly was ready to move in once the sites had been agreed upon.
Hon. Allotey assured residents that, in the meantime, the Assembly would provide two water tanks to supply the community as a temporary measure while preparations for the boreholes were undertaken.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey in a key note address said the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme continued to provide direct financial support to extremely poor and vulnerable households to cushion them against poverty and help them meet their basic needs.
She said the government was expanding the programme from 350,000 households to 400,000 beneficiary households, adding that the ongoing onboarding of eligible households was supporting the expansion and the resumption of payments.
The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Hon. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, said he was committed to supporting the effective delivery of social protection programmes, particularly to vulnerable groups and people who needed them most.
According to him, interventions such as the Ghana School Feeding Programme for children and social protection support for the elderly must be implemented in a way that ensures the intended beneficiaries are reached.
The community dialogue brought together residents and officials from the Ministry and Assembly to discuss social protection programmes and social issues affecting vulnerable groups.
Free NHIS registration and renewal of cards were also provided as part of the community dialogue.
