Armed robbers have hit another cash-in-transit in the Western Region town of Tarkwa.
State-owned Daily Graphic reports that the attack happened in front of a supermarket on Monday morning amid sporadic shooting.
“The robbers were said to have trailed the bullion van, which arrived at the Ransbet Super Shopping Market, at about 9 a.m. to collect the weekend sales to the bank. One of the robbers was said to have disguised himself as a shopper with a gun on him.
“There were no fatalities as the armed men robbed at ease," the newspaper reports on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.
There was no police escort with the Mon-Trans vehicle transiting the cash, according to the Manager of the supermarket, identified as Ms Mabel Dzedu by the newspaper.
“The robber first entered the cosmetic shop and walked around for a while and then picked a drink and other items, paid for the items at the counter and waited for the items to be bagged,” he said.
Ms Dzedu, according to the publication, told Daily Graphic that Mon-Trans, a transportation service provider, was contracted to carry money from the shop to the bank on a daily basis.
“When the bankers arrived, the team went through the process of counting the sales and after the transaction was completed, they carried the money towards the waiting bullion van,” the paper quoted her.
More than GH¢107,00 was robbed according to the publication.
Cash-transit vehicle attacks by robbers have been on the rise in recent times.
In June this year, a police officer, Emmanuel Osei, was killed together with a female trader by armed robbers during a similar cash-transit vehicle robbery at Jamestown, a suburb of Accra.
That incident prompted a review of cash-transit protocols in Accra.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
