Tragedy struck the town of Nkwanta in the Oti Region when a student of Nkwanta Senior High School lost his life after being hit by a stray bullet while writing his mock examination.

The incident occurred around midday on June 27, 2025, sending shockwaves through the school community.

Eyewitnesses say the classroom was thrown into chaos after the student, whose identity has yet to be officially confirmed, collapsed during the paper.

The bullet reportedly came from an unknown source outside the school compound.

In response to the incident, authorities have shut down all basic schools in the area as a safety precaution. Education officials say the closure is temporary but necessary to ensure students and teachers remain unharmed as investigations continue.

The circumstances surrounding the stray bullet are still unclear, but security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation.

Residents have expressed concern over the growing safety threats affecting students in what should be safe learning environments.

This comes after tensions once again erupted in the area, prompting the deployment of heavy security personnel following renewed chieftaincy-related violence.

The latest clash occurred on Wednesday, June 26, when a group attempted to pour libation as part of preparations for the upcoming Yam Festival.

The act was resisted by another faction, reigniting longstanding tensions among the town’s ethnic groups.

According to the Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Antwi, the incident caught local authorities off guard, especially given that a prior agreement had been reached to suspend all public festivals amid heightened tensions.
