Ashanti Region : Police allegedly butcher 33 -year- old driver

Police in the Ashanti region have allegedly beaten and butchered a 33-year-old driver, causing his death shortly after the incident.

The incident occurred yesterday October 16, 2019.

Residents of Asante-Adomfe in the region narrated eyewitness accounts of how some police officers beat and butchered the driver.

Speaking to Starr FM, residents said that about seven police officers with three in uniform stormed the area for an operation and had an altercation with the deceased, restrained him to the ground, kicked and punched him in the face before some of the officers started butchering him with a machete.

The Assembly Man for the area Samuel Kofi Boadu also said the policemen who were on patrol searched for one Mr. Kamkam and another Yaa Yaa who live in the area.

He said since they did not find these individuals, they ransacked their homes and did not find anything as well.

He detailed: “so when they were returning from the girls place, they met two guys on the street and they just grabbed them. And one of them was asking what he had done, and in trying to explain, they started beating him up, and one of the police personnel’s went to the patrol vehicle and took a cutlass and cut his back very deeply.”

“So after cutting the person, those around there started approaching the police, and on realizing that the mob was increasing they started giving out warning shots, about 7-8 shots, then they put the victims into the car and sped off, “ he further indicated.

Mr. Boadu said he called the district police commander to find out but got notified that no police personnel was deployed to the area.

Sister of the deceased Abena Gyamfi said the family is shattered by the killing of their brother. She disclosed that her deceased brother was with one Kwame Boateng who is behind bars now.

She said her late brother had so many cuts all over his body. “Most parts of his body had been bandaged and the police say they cannot identify the police officers who were at post when the incident happened,“ she said.

District commander for the area Superintendent Anyani Andrews confirmed the incident to said that the policemen involved in the incident are not from his station, but from the Konongo Division.

He confirmed that “there was police presence in the community, there was an arrest, and this morning one of those arrested was reported dead.
