The Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament has said it will meet with the Attorney-General and the General Legal Council (GLC), Tuesday in an effort to address concerns surrounding legal education in the country.
The meeting comes on the heels of a petition submitted to the committee by Students of the Ghana school of law, who are demanding the outright scrapping of the Independent Examination Board, mandated to examine and mark their scripts.
A press conference held Wednesday, saw the law students accuse the Independent Examination body of being solely responsible for the alleged failure of about 80 percent of students who wrote the Bar exams.
The students have also appealed to Parliament to abolish the Legislative Instrument (L.I) seeking to regulate admissions into the Law School.
Member of Parliament's Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Shaibu Mahama has however hinted that some MPs are gathering signatures to strike out the new LI which seeks to legalize both entrance examination and subsequent interviews organized for law students by the General Legal Council.
Shaibu Mahama said the Parliament's Subsidiary Legislation Committee have listened to both the law students and the General Legal Council and it's likely they will not pass the new LI.
The Supreme Court has last year ruled that both entrance examinations and subsequent interview for entry into the Ghana School of Law to pursue professional law course was unconstitutional and directed the school to formulate an LI that will make the regulations for entry into the school constitutional.
The LI was laid before Parliament but was later withdrawn from Parliament by the Attorney General.
