The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the unlawful possession of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following a police operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on January 26, 2026, during a snap check exercise at the Asanso police checkpoint.
He was driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 when officers intercepted the vehicle.
A search conducted on the bus led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks concealed inside the vehicle.

Upon inspection, the sacks were found to contain dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. Further examination revealed a total of 713 compressed slabs of the suspected substances.
Police said that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00, but the offer was rejected.
The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police say efforts are underway to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons who may be connected to the offence.
