A boy has been killed and several vehicles destroyed following a shooting incident at a mining company site at Adelekezu near Dadwen in the Axim District of the Western Region, the police have confirmed.

According to a statement by the Western Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

The police said preliminary findings indicate that some youth from Adelekezu had a misunderstanding with private security personnel of the mining company. The youth allegedly attempted to invade the company’s concession and tried to seize a pump-action gun from one of the security guards.

In the course of the struggle, the security man reportedly resisted and fired the weapon, fatally hitting a boy. The victim was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following news of the boy’s death, the situation escalated as angry youth went on a rampage at the mining site, setting company property ablaze and threatening workers. Police who responded to the scene found two 4×4 SUV vehicles and two tipper trucks completely burnt, while a pickup vehicle and a Toyota Land Cruiser were damaged.

The police said their intervention led to the rescue of 11 workers who were under threat during the disturbances. Five suspects have since been arrested in connection with the violence. They are Gyenyaame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21). The suspects were arrested for causing harm and unlawful damage and are currently assisting police with investigations.

The Western Regional Police Command has appealed to residents of Adelekezu and surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate with investigators to ensure justice is served.
