Canoe accident on Oti River claims 8 lives

8 persons drowned after a canoe in which they were traveling capsized on the Oti River, Monday, March 27.

The passengers were mourners traveling from Kpajoti, a village in the Krachi Nchumuru District to Sabaja in the Krachi West Municipality.

According to Francis Yaw Bio, Assemblyman of the Wuringa electoral area, Oti region, said the passengers were not wearing life jackets in the overloaded canoe.

He said the maximum the canoe takes is 6 however, it was overloaded with 11 passengers and unfortunately 8 lost their lives.

 

Monday's incident comes a week after Five persons were confirmed dead after a boat carrying mourners capsized on the Volta Lake

According to witnesses, three children and two women were confirmed as the victims in the tragedy which happened as a group of mourners were returnng from a funeral in the Volta region.
