Government has given an executive approval  for the Cape Coast and Tamale Polytechnics to be included in the upgrading of Ghana's polytechnics to degree awarding technical institutions.

This brings to eight the number of Polytechnics to be upgraded with the Wa and Bolgatanga Polytechnics still not meeting the requirement.

According to the Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the Cape Coast and Tamale Polytechnics have been added to the initial six following a reassessment of the two schools.

In a letter to the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) primenewsghana chanced upon, the minister urged the council to "kindly communicate the executive approval to the Cape Coast and Tamale Polytechnics and take necessary steps to ensure a smooth transfer of all eight Polytechnics by end of September".

The upgrading of the Polytechnics is in fulfilment of President John Mahama's pledge to enhance technical education in the country which led to the enactment of the Technical Universities Act 2016 (Act 922).
