The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has arrested the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The arrest occurred shortly after he left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra on Tuesday.
The reasons behind the arrest remain unclear, as EOCO has yet to release a statement.
Meanwhile, large crowds of NPP supporters and regional executives have gathered at the EOCO headquarters, demanding clarity and access to their colleague.
Their presence created a tense atmosphere, prompting the deployment of military personnel to the scene to ensure order and prevent any potential escalation.
Speaking to the media, NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, expressed outrage over what he described as unjust treatment of the party stalwart.
He criticised EOCO for allegedly refusing to grant party executives access to Wontumi and condemned what he perceived as politically motivated harassment.
“This situation is unfortunate. Denying access to our own Regional Chairman without justification raises serious concerns,” Nana Boakye said. “We will not tolerate any form of political intimidation disguised as law enforcement.”
Chairman Wontumi honoured police invitation on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 after appearing for interrogation on Monday, May 26, 2025.
He was granted bail with two sureties and was cautioned on three allegations:
1. Undertaking mining operations without a license
2. Pollution of water bodies
3. Entering a forest reserve without authorisation
