The Ashanti regional council of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) will embark on a strike if government fails to pay the premium of workers by the end of June 2017.

The council says their ultimatum stems from the fact that government had failed to implement a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on August 18, 2016, between government of Ghana and CLOGSAG to commence payment of their premium from January 2017.

In August 2016, CLOGSAG embarked on a three-week strike over the payment of their 15% interim market premium and only returned to work after an MoU was signed between them and government.

Former President, John Mahama while speaking at the 10th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the TUC in Kumasi in 2016, explained that any attempt to yield to CLOGSAG demands “will throw the budget completely off track, and make nonsense of the sacrifices" made to reduce the budget deficit.

He, therefore, assured them that their demands were going to be factored into the 2017 budget.

CLOGSAG is frustrated that government had made interim payments to other categories of workers but had failed to extend the payments to their members and

A statement on Monday said the Regional Council had resolved that if government fails to pay the premium by the end of June 2017 and the national leadership also fails to declare a nationwide strike, the Ashanti regional branch will be left with no option than to proceed on an indefinite strike from 3rd July 2017”.

The statement said CLOGSAG has been treated unfairly and unjustifiably by government and members should prepare for the impending strike to drum home their grievances.
