Dr Stephen Opuni is expected to appear before an Accra High Court today, Monday, March 26, 2018, over 27 counts of offences amounting to GHs217,345,289.

The Former chief executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board together with Businessman Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited were charged with 27 counts of offences including defrauding the state by false pretences and causing financial loss to the state.

Dr Stephen Opuni was also charged with three counts of money laundering contrary to the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2008.

Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited have on the same charge sheet been charged with selling misbranded fertilizer contrary to section 114(1)(b) of the Plants and Fertilizer Act 2010(Act 803) and selling adulterated fertilizer.

A recent investigative report compiled by COCOBOD revealed that a contract was signed by Dr Opuni to approve the sale of harmful fertilisers produced by Agricult at a cost of about $19 million in March 2014.

The Economic and Organised Crimes Office, EOCO, froze the assets of Dr Stephen Opuni in February 2017 as part of investigations into his tenure of office.

Dr Stephen opuni was appointed as head of COCOBOD on November 13, 2013 but has been accused of mismanagement during his four-year tenure.

Meanwhile, Deputy Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Fred Agbenyo has said the charges levelled against Dr Stephen Opuni will not stand the test of time because they are inaccurate.

In an interview with Prime News, Fred Agbenyo said the charges against Dr Stephen Opuni are plans by the NPP to get NDC members behind bars.
