The Government of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with London-based civil engineering and infrastructure firm, QG Construction UK Limited, for the development of an Institute of Green and Sustainable Science and Technology at the Acherensua Campus of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences (UEAS), Bunso.
The agreement, signed through the Ministry of Education, forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen tertiary education, applied research and innovation in climate-responsive technologies, while positioning UEAS as a leading centre for science, technology and sustainable development.
The proposed institute is expected to serve as a hub for practical learning, industry collaboration and applied research, with a focus on green technology, climate-smart agriculture and sustainable engineering. It will equip students with relevant skills to support Ghana’s transition to a green economy and enhance the country’s capacity to respond to climate change challenges.
Tertiary institutions play a critical role in Ghana’s climate and green solutions architecture, particularly in the training of human resources across key sectors of the economy. Beyond skills development, universities are central to research, curriculum design and policy formulation in areas such as climate adaptation, resilience and the green economy, making the establishment of the institute strategically significant.
Ghana’s commitment to climate learning and skills development was reinforced at the 20th Conference of Parties (COP20) in Lima, Peru, where the country received approval under the UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC:Learn) to develop a National Climate Change Learning Strategy. The strategy aims to strengthen institutional capacity and implement action plans through a country-driven approach.
QG Construction UK Limited has an expanding footprint in Ghana’s infrastructure sector. The firm is set to undertake a US$50 million modernisation of the Tamale Airport in the Northern Region, which will include the construction of a new international terminal building, access roads and ancillary civil aviation facilities within the existing airport space.
The Tamale Airport expansion is expected to improve connectivity to northern Ghana, stimulate economic growth, boost tourism and enhance socio-economic development. The new multipurpose facility will also serve as a terminal building during the Hajj season, supporting religious travel and related services.
The MoU with the Ministry of Education adds to a growing list of UK-Ghana infrastructure collaborations, including major road, market and airport projects, underscoring the role of UK firms in Ghana’s development agenda while advancing shared objectives in sustainable infrastructure, education and economic transformation.
