The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that Ghana has officially sent a request to the United States to extradite former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and an alleged accomplice, Ernest Darko Akore.
Dr Ayine made this announcement on Thursday, December 18, 2025, during the government’s Accountability Series.
He explained that the extradition process began on November 19, 2025, when the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) submitted a formal request for action against the two individuals.
According to the Attorney-General, the request is part of investigations into allegations that Mr Ofori-Atta caused financial loss to the state in connection with the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) case.
Dr Ayine said the Attorney-General’s Department initially reviewed the documents and identified some gaps that needed to be corrected to meet legal requirements. As a result, the office wrote to the OSP on November 25, requesting additional information.
He added that the OSP responded on December 9, 2025, providing all the necessary documents and addressing the concerns raised.
After completing the review, the Attorney-General’s office forwarded the extradition request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 10, 2025. The Ministry has since sent it to the appropriate authorities in the United States, including the US Department of Justice.
Dr Ayine noted that the next step now depends on the US authorities, who will decide whether there is enough legal basis to extradite the two individuals to Ghana to face trial.
