A family of seven has been killed in a devastating fire at Akyempim in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, November 1, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Dunkwa-On-Offin Fire Station received a distress call at 1:04 a.m. regarding a fire outbreak. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 1:20 a.m. and found one room of the four-bedroom houses completely engulfed in flames and locked from the outside.
The fire crew managed to tactically contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the remaining three bedrooms. However, the seven occupants who were trapped inside could not be rescued. The victims included five children, aged between one and fifteen years, and two adults who were all trapped in the locked room.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the husband of one of the deceased women allegedly set the room on fire and locked it before fleeing the scene. Police later found the suspect dead in a nearby bush, with indications that he took his own life.
The GNFS stated that the charred bodies of the victims have been handed over to the Ghana Police Service to assist with further investigations.
