The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned the public against the use of chemicals to accelerate the ripening of plantain.
The warning follows a video circulating on social media alleging that a chemical substance was being used to speed up the ripening of plantain at the Madina Market in Accra.
In a public notice issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, the FDA said it had launched investigations into the matter in collaboration with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly.
The FDA said its officials engaged traders at the market as well as the individual featured in the video to establish the authenticity of the claims.
The Authority said the investigation forms part of its mandate to protect public health and safety.
