The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has directed the immediate recall of Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink, following laboratory tests that confirmed the presence of an undeclared prescription drug, Sildenafil Citrate.
In a statement, the FDA said the product, manufactured by 1 Africa Industries Limited, had been adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension.
According to the FDA, the substance poses severe health risks, especially when consumed with alcohol or nitrate medications, as it may cause dangerously low blood pressure leading to stroke or heart attack.
The regulatory body emphasized that Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink is registered as an alcoholic beverage and should not contain any medicinal ingredients. The adulteration, the FDA noted, violates Section 100(4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).
Consumers have been strongly cautioned to stop purchasing or consuming the product. The FDA is working with the manufacturer to recall all affected batches from the market and ensure safe disposal.
Retailers, distributors, and the general public have also been urged to report any continued sale of the product to the nearest FDA office.
“The FDA remains fully committed to protecting public health by ensuring that all regulated products, including alcoholic beverages, are safe, of good quality, and properly manufactured,” the statement concluded.
