A major industrial fire has broken out at a plastics factory near Weija Junction in Accra.

Eight fire appliances from Weija, Kasoa, Anyaa, Circle, the Industrial Area, National Headquarters and Dansoman are currently at the scene battling the blaze.

Greater Accra Regional Fire Officer ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu said crews were working to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. “We are trying our best to bring the fire under control and stop the fire from gutting adjoining buildings here. Two of our plants got to the main junction and they broke down,” he said.

In a post on Facebook, the service said one fire officer had been injured during the operation.

A further update from another officer confirmed the fire began at 03:27 GMT. The affected factory processes rubber products such as buckets and bowls, using gathered plastics that are ground and reproduced.

“We have managed to confine the fire. The fire that was threatening people’s homes and people were crying and packing their things and running away — we reassure everybody that we have managed to confine the fire,” the officer said.

He added that petroleum-based rubber products were fueling the intensity of the blaze.

Emergency teams remain on site.
