#FixTheCountry campaigners say the arrest of some of their conveners by the Ghana Police Service is an ‘abuse of power’.

A statement from the campaigners after the arrest said "The Police did not inform the Convenors of why they were being arrested".

According to the statement, the police did not formally charge the conveners but their lawyers are at the police station to understand why they were arrested.

Press Update.
1. Earlier today, the Accra High Court dismissed an application brought by the Police and the Attorney-General for an injunction against the #FixTheCountry demonstration.
2. We are grateful to the Courts for reaffirming yet again, for the second time, our constitutional right to demonstrate. At this time, no Court order stops us from going on a demonstration.
3. However, while waiting for the ruling of the Court at 1:30pm today, the Police arrested 15 of the #FixTheCountry Convenors. The 15 include Convenors who were in Court specifically because they have been sued by the Police and the Attorney-General. The other Convenors were also there to express their solidarity and attend the hearing which is open to the public.
3. The Police did not inform the Convenors of why they were being arrested. Also the Police has not formally charged the convenors as far as we understand. Our lawyers are at the Police Station at this time.
4. We condemn this continuous abuse of power and disrespect of our Courts by the Government. Their actions are illegal and in breach of our constitutional rights. Acts like this only happen under Police States and we refuse to allow ourselves to go any further down this path.
5. We call on Ghanaians to join us to fight for Ghana. They have come for your pockets, your livelihoods, your resources and now are coming for your tongues too. Resist! Contact us on WhatsApp on 0549214976.
