Government has rejected demands by owners of private senior high schools to include them in the list of schools placing candidates for free SHS.

At a press conference yesterday, the proprietors accused government of sidelining them and hence, demanded that they be included. "Private schools are not enlisted in the CSSPS so students cannot even select them. Students are not coming to private schools this year because the posting system has been unfair to private schools. All private schools should be enrolled unto the system to give students the chance to select them”, said the public relations officer for CHASS, Kyei Baffour.

However, deputy minister of education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum says Free SHS is not meant for private schools.

"We need to support the private sector to thrive but when it comes to a government policy, such as Free SHS, we are sending students to public schools across the country, and not private schools"

“We are introducing measures that will improve quality. Of course, private providers want a market but it is not fair for them to disparage an existing system which is working well just because they want to get a piece of the pie, in terms of the market”

He added that he understands their plight because he is also a proprietor of a private school and could have benefitted personally, but that is not the point. The minister, therefore, affirmed that there would not be any change made to the policy to favour the private sector.

The flagship Free SHS policy took off Monday, September 11, although there have been several concerns that the policy will not favour private schools. Reports claim that the number of students who were admitted into private schools this year turned out to be very minimal because they were not included in the Computerized School Selection Placement System.
