The Ghana Navy, supported by the Ghana Air Force, has launched a search and rescue operation after gunmen attacked fishermen at sea near Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces, the operation began at dawn on Thursday, February 26, and is ongoing 35 nautical miles off the coast.

Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm as efforts continue.

The attack reportedly targeted fishermen returning from their early morning expedition.

The assailants, operating a black boat, allegedly opened fire, leaving the victims stranded in the water, and made away with outboard motors and generator sets from seven canoes.

Speaking to the media, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed the incident and reassured that security agencies have been deployed to the area.

“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen usually go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked,” she said.

Authorities are investigating the incident and have not disclosed the nationality of the attackers.

The Ghana Armed Forces said further details would be communicated as the search and rescue operation progresses.
