The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, together with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has visited Bukom to commiserate with families affected by a recent tragic accident that claimed the life of a young woman and left several others injured.
The visit took the delegation to the accident scene, the home of the bereaved family, and the residences of some survivors.
Addressing the bereaved family and members of the community, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey expressed Government’s heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident and assured them that they were not alone in this difficult time.
“We are here to express our deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family and all those who were injured. It is heartbreaking that a young lady in the prime of her life has been lost. We pray for speedy recovery of those receiving medical care and wish them strength as they heal,” she said.
She explained that President Mahama, upon learning of the incident through the media reports, directed that she and the Greater Accra Regional Minister visit the affected families to assess the situation firsthand and offer Government’s support.
The Minister noted that while some victims remain on admission, others have been discharged and were visited by the delegation. She indicated that Government would assess the needs of the injured to determine the appropriate support to be provided. With respect to the bereaved family, she explained that due to the matter being before the court, Government would await the necessary feedback before taking the next course of action.
Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey stressed the need to improve road safety to help prevent similar tragedies, adding that the Greater Accra Regional Minister in collaboration with the Mayor and the area’s Member of Parliament, would engage relevant stakeholders to identify practical measures to enhance safety within the community.
She also commended the youth and residents of Bukom for their swift response following the accident, praising their selfless efforts in rescuing the injured and assisting with the dignified conveyance of the deceased.
“We are grateful to the young people and the entire community for their compassion and solidarity during this difficult moment. Your prompt response undoubtedly helped many of the victims,” she said.
The Minister and the Greater Accra Regional Minister were accompanied by the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Alfred Nii Ashie Kotey, and the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
