The Ghana Education Service, GES, has condemned a stabbing and an alleged rape involving students during the just-ended Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, describing the incidents as unacceptable and promising firm action.
In a statement issued on February 11, 2026, GES management said it had received reports of serious misconduct linked to the inter-school competition held from February 4 to 6.
According to preliminary information, a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed about 200 metres from the competition venue while he had stepped out to have lunch with a friend.
The victim was allegedly attacked by students of New Juaben Senior High School. He received medical treatment and has since been discharged. One suspect has been arrested and is assisting police with investigations.
In a separate incident, a female student of Osino Senior High School was allegedly raped in a bush at some distance from the competition grounds. Two students have been arrested in connection with the case and are currently in police custody. A third suspect, described as the alleged ringleader and an old student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is reportedly on the run.
GES said the female student received medical attention and has been discharged from hospital. She is currently receiving counselling and psychosocial support from the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls Education Unit, and officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit.
Management stressed that inter school sports are meant to promote discipline, teamwork and unity among students, and should not be overshadowed by violence or criminal conduct.
The Service said it is treating the incidents with utmost seriousness. It indicated that all persons found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct and due process. The Regional Director of Education has been directed to apply appropriate sanctions to the schools involved as a deterrent to others.
GES has urged students, parents and the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
