As part of the 61st Independence Day Celebrations which took place at the Black Square in Accra on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, some Ghanaians grabbed the opportunity to share their views on the state of the nation since it attained independence.

Prime News observed that a portion of Ghanaians thought the country has been able to develop and improve its systems to an extent, while others thought nothing much had been achieved considering the fact that the country is in its 61st year after gaining political independence.

According to some citizens, Ghana has developed in terms of infrastructure which involves the basic physical systems such as communication, transportation, water, electrical systems. Some made mention of the fact that the previous Mahama led administration and the current government have played a major role in the development of Ghana's infrastructure and its physical systems.

On the other hand, some complained that despite attaining Independence for the past 61 years, the problem of unemployment and economic hardship still remains a challenge which affects thousands of citizens.

An SHS graduate-turned-pure water seller who spoke to Prime News bemoaned President Akufo-Addo to help youth like himself gain access to free Tertiary education just like that which has been done for Senior High School Students. According to him, he had completed SHS since 2012 and has been struggling to find money to continue his education. He further pleaded that even if it won't be possible for everyone to go through tertiary education, there should be available jobs so that people will not resort to criminal activities.

Another citizen claimed that the year 2018 has been one of the worst years, considering the recent spate of armed robberies and the resulting threat to the security of citizens in the country. "Now, we are very scared. So much crime here and there, and its because most people don't have jobs. And the police must also be vigilant", he said.

The 61st Independence celebration was marked with a parade by officers and men drawn from the Armed Forces and various Security Services as well as teachers and students from first and second cycle institutions in the Accra Metropolis.

The celebration under the theme "Ghana beyond Aid" saw in attendance, Nigeria's President Mahammadu Buhari, President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Bawumia, members of the various arms of government, members of the diplomatic corps, other notable dignitaries and the general public at the Black Star Square in Accra.
