The country could suffer the fate of Sierra Leone if measures are not put in place to check unplanned residential development in some areas, an expert at the Department of Geography of the University of Ghana, Dr Alex Owusu Barimah has cautioned

A mudslide hit Sierra Leone this week, claiming some 400 lives and displacing up to three thousand. Over 600 are still unaccounted for in the nations worst ever disaster.

Dr Owusu Barimah in an interview with Citi News said a similar fate may befall Ghana if city authorities do not put proper measures in place at some locations

According to him, a place like Weija and John Teye in Accra have materials being removed from the base of hills while buildings are constructed at the top.

At Aburi, said, due to the construction works, sides of the road have been removed causing some sliding which could result in a disaster in future.

"In Secondi Takoradi, it is a big issue as materials are removed everywhere and buildings are constructed at the top. It is about time we take a look at the situation as it won't be long for a similar mudslide to happen in Ghana," he stated.

He advised authorities not to wait till there is a disaster "The problem is that we still have the same attitude, waiting for the disaster to occur before attempting to find a solution."

Meanwhile, government has mobilized resources to support the victims of the mudslide at Sierra Leone.

Minister for Information, Mustapha Hamid said the Ghana Airforce Military Aircraft and officials of NADMO would take off Friday afternoon with relief items to affected area of Sierra Leone.
