The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that the Ghana card will become a mandatory requirement for the purchase and renewal of motor and other insurance products, effective 1 January, 2026.
In a notice, the Commission said all individuals seeking insurance services will be required to present a valid Ghana card before any transaction can be processed.
The directive also applies to corporate entities, which will be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when engaging in motor insurance transactions.
According to the NIC, the policy forms part of efforts to strengthen Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) controls within the insurance sector, while also improving claims management.
The commission believes the new requirement will help curb fraud and bring Ghana’s insurance industry in line with international financial services standards.
The move mirrors similar regulatory measures already adopted within the financial sector, including directives by the Bank of Ghana, which require the Ghana card for bank deposits and other financial transactions.
