Ghana has initiated a travel ban on all travellers to and from Malta from today, Monday, December 20, 2021, due to the Omicron virus.

Ghana’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which announced the ban, reveal further that Ghana does not recognise any vaccine certificate from the nation formed by a group of small islands.

The Ministry has therefore asked the general public to take note and adhere to the ban accordingly.

Ghana’s decision on Malta is curious because last week, Malta announced that people aged over 35 can now register to get the COVID-19 booster jab as part of efforts to contain rising COVID case numbers.

Health Minister Chris Fearne, who announced the latest update, said the country has yet to detect a case of the Omicron variant that is sweeping the UK and parts of Europe.

He pointed to the booster as being crucial to tackling the spread of COVID-19, especially the more contagious Omicron variant.

While there has yet to be an Omicron case detected in Malta, Fearne said it was only a matter of days before a case is detected since it has already been established that the variant will become the dominant virus in Europe in the coming weeks.

Ghana has also placed a temporary travel ban on Israel and South Korea, from Monday, December 20, 2021, for a period of 14 days.

In the cases of Israel and South Korea, the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration did not provide details for imposing the 14-day ban.
