The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, and Salaga South MP, Ibrahimah Mohammed Zuwera, have jointly introduced a Private Members’ Bill seeking to amend Article 94 of 1992 Constitution of Ghana to establish a maximum age limit for parliamentary candidates.

The proposed legislation recommends capping the age at 65, effectively barring individuals above that threshold from contesting parliamentary elections in any constituency.

In a draft submitted to the Clerk of Parliament on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the lawmakers noted that while the Constitution sets 21 as the minimum age requirement for aspiring MPs, it does not currently provide a maximum age limit.

They argued that evolving governance demands, shifting democratic dynamics, and the need for greater legislative efficiency make a strong case for the proposed amendment.

“Parliamentary duties require sustained physical stamina, cognitive agility, and responsiveness to complex policy challenges, including digital transformation, climate change, and global economic integration,” portions of the draft document stated.

The MPs further explained that introducing a reasonable age cap would help ensure consistent performance in legislative responsibilities, reduce risks associated with age-related incapacity, and promote structured leadership transition within Parliament.

They also indicated that the proposal aligns with international best practices aimed at strengthening institutional capacity.
