Ghanaian MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says teenage girls in Ghana who cannot abstain from sex should either have sex during their ‘safe’ periods or use condoms to avoid teenage pregnancy.

The Effutu MP argued that abstinence is the best in the quest to reduce the alarming rate of teenage pregnancy in Ghana, he, however, observed that a lot of teenage girls couldn’t abstain from sex.

Contributing to a discussion in Parliament, the MP said: “That period of ovulation, if you do it you will get pregnant, don’t have sex but if you want to have sex, use a condom, we can’t stop you!”
According to Alexander Afenyo-Markin for those teenage girls who cannot abstain from sex, they should be given an intensive sexual education on how to practice safe sex.

The temptation will be there when you finish your [menstrual] cycle; that period, five days, there will be that urge to do it [have sex].

“If you know you’re 18 [years] and above and you cannot be a good Christian, you can’t be a good Muslim, and you want to have sex, Mr Speaker, ultimately abstinence is the best but many of them cannot abstain. They cannot, so they must use condom,” he stated.

Meanwhile, MP for North Dayi, Joyceline Tetteh in making a statement on the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy urged parents and teachers to teach their wards and pupils about the use of condoms.

“Mr Speaker, sex education in our basic schools must be prioritised and taught. Parents must know and ought to be interested in the extracurricular activities of their children, especially the teenage ones. We must begin as a country to teach safer sex practices amongst the youth instead of assuming that our children are ignorant of sex as an act and sexuality as a topic.

“Condom use must be mentioned while preaching the abstinence we desire as parents and teachers. The effort required to address this social problem of huge significance can only be effective if it is multi-faceted”

According to her, concerted efforts must be adopted to address the factors that lead to teenage pregnancies rather than condemning the girls who get pregnant while in school.
