Heavy rains on Monday, September 27, have wreaked havoc in parts of the Ashanti Region as floods destroyed property and disrupted the day’s activity.

At one of the hardest areas, Ahenema Kokoben in Kumasi, three people swept by heavy floods are feared dead.

They were part of a group on board a KIA truck that got stuck in rushing floodwaters.

An eyewitness recounted the following to Kumasi-based Nhyira FM in Twi: I saw them plead with the truck driver to transport them in the bucket since it was difficult to cross due to the rain. When they got to the middle of the river, it had flooded, and the driver attempted to park, but the rain was drawing the car. I saw the people jump into the water, and they disappeared.”

The heavy rains started around 6:30 pm and lasted for about three hours.

major roads and in Kumasi, Obuasi and their environs got flooded.

Nhyiaeso was also among the places the floods hit hard as some residents rescued a man whose vehicle was sinking in thick floods.

We came to meet him sitting on top of the vehicle; the water kept increasing. Finally, we were able to get a rope, and we threw it to him, and with that, we could pull him to safety, an eyewitness recounted.

Relief efforts have not yet started in affected areas.
