Helicopter crash: Check out the roads that will be closed for Friday's state funeral

The Ghana Police Service has outlined a series of temporary road closures, traffic diversions, and designated parking arrangements ahead of Friday’s inter-denominational and inter-faith state funeral for victims of the recent military helicopter crash.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place on August 15, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra. The traffic management measures, according to the police, are aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining order around the venue.

Road Closures
The following roads will be closed during the event:

  • 28th February Road, from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.

  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street.

  • Castle Road, from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.

  • Starlet 91 Road, closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Traffic Diversions
Motorists have been advised to note the following diversions:

  • Vehicles from La, Labone, and Osu on 28th February Road heading towards the Central Business District and Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue at Castle Traffic Light, linking with Oxford Street.

  • Traffic from Lokko Street, Osu, towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street.

  • Vehicles from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.

  • Traffic from AU Circle towards Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted to Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads, joining Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Approved Parking Areas
Only vehicles with approved RED windscreen entry stickers marked “VVIP” will be granted access to Black Star Square and its designated parking areas, including:

  • Black Star Square (VVIP, VIP)

  • Forecourt of the State House

  • International Conference Centre

  • Access Bank Car Park

  • Osu Cemetery Car Park

  • Accra Sports Stadium Car Park

  • Ministries Area

  • Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park

  • Marine Drive Football Park

  • Afua Sutherland Car Park

Enforcement Measures
The police stressed that no vehicle will be allowed to park at unauthorized locations or pass through restricted areas. Towing and recovery trucks will be on standby to remove abandoned, disabled, or wrongly parked vehicles.

The public, particularly motorists, has been urged to cooperate with security agencies to ensure effective traffic management during the state funeral.
