The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defense, who served as the Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.
The Omane Boamah and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, and six others died in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash on their way to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement issued on Friday, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa described the news as shocking and disheartening, given Dr. Boamah’s role as a dedicated and vocal member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
“His absence at our meetings will be felt,” the Commission said, noting his active contributions to electoral dialogue and reform.
The EC extended condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, the bereaved families, and the people of Ghana, adding: “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”
A flower-laying ceremony, which began on Thursday, August 7, is underway as part of a series of national mourning activities leading up to the state burial scheduled for August 15, 2025.
