The Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, has commended the existing relationship between Ghana and the Czech Republic, especially in the area of security.

He said the Czech government has trained personnel of the Ghana Police Service, with the most recent being training of four Police Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service in cyber security in the Czech Republic.

He made these remarks at the National Day of the Czech Republic and the historic visit of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Mr Petr Fiala, in Accra, Ghana.

“Surely, the training has not only developed and strengthened the skills and abilities of our gallant Police Officers but has equipped them with up-to-date information on cyber security, necessary at a period when the region is volatile with non-state actors using various means to perpetuate violent acts,” he said.

According to him, both countries have enjoyed a long-standing tradition of cooperation at international fora, including support for each other’s candidature for positions at various multilateral institutions.

“Indeed, Ghana was one of the first countries that recognised the Czech Republic as a nation and supported its quest for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 1994.

“As you are aware, Ghana since joining the Security Council, has championed the major issues affecting peace and security on the African continent. High-level debates have been convened by both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey in the Security Council to highlight the scale and complexity of terrorism on the continent of Africa and to emphasise the urgency of global action to support military and non-kinetic interventions,” the Minister said.

He said Ghana is scheduled to host, in the first week of December, the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial meeting in Accra and look forward to the Czech Republic’s participation.
