The Ghana Police Service has launched dual investigations into a physical altercation between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025.
According to an official police statement, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is examining claims that Afenyo-Markin assaulted a uniformed officer at the entrance of Parliament House. The probe was initiated after the CID formally sought the Speaker of Parliament’s approval to question the lawmaker. Speaker Alban Bagbin subsequently instructed Afenyo-Markin to cooperate with the police.

Responding to the directive, the Effutu MP voluntarily appeared before the CID on Wednesday, May 7, to assist in the inquiry.
In a new development, the Police also disclosed that a second investigation is underway—this time based on a complaint filed by Afenyo-Markin himself. In his petition, the Minority Leader claims that he, in fact, was assaulted by the same officer now accusing him.
The incident reportedly occurred as Afenyo-Markin led protesters to Parliament to present a petition advocating for judicial independence. According to his account, a police officer identified as Constable Forson struck him forcefully in the chest at a barricade, leaving him breathless and disoriented. He was assisted by security personnel and supporters and briefly taken to rest before continuing with the demonstration.
The officer in question allegedly left the scene immediately after the encounter, prompting questions about his conduct and intentions.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that both sides of the altercation are being thoroughly investigated and that further information will be shared as the case unfolds.
