Some male students of KNUST are vehemently disputing a decision by the management of the University to convert two all-male halls into mixed halls.

According to report, management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST wants University Hall, popularly known as Katanga and Unity Hall to now accommodate females.

But occupants of the two halls despite their rivalry have come together to protest the decision, saying they will stage a massive demonstration to register their displeasure over the decision and will fight with their last breath to maintain the long-standing tradition of Katanga and Unity hall.

Reports suggest that management of KNUST want more ladies to be accommodated into the traditional halls on campus to reduce the insecurity females off campus go through hence their decision to convert all-male halls to mixed.

However, speaking exclusively to PrimeNewsGhana, an Executive Member of Unity Hall said the reason given them by management to convert all-male halls to mixed halls is lame and is borne out of selfish interest other than what they have put out.

According to the hall executive, granted the reason given by Management that ladies in KNUST are insecure and therefore must be protected is really the crust of their decision, there have been instances where three guys have been shot off campus, therefore the management’s reason given for their decision is neither here nor there because every student must be protected irrespective of their gender.

He also emphasized that they will not be at the receiving end of management’s negligence and as such, they have vowed to do whatever they can to protect the ‘DNA’ of KNUST come what may.

There are six Halls of residence and a number of hostels in the University. They are Queen Elizabeth II, Unity, Independence, Republic, University, and Africa. Three of the Halls of residence are mixed, two for males only and one for females only.
