Former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has been formally charged with publishing false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), his legal counsel has confirmed.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, legal counsel for Mr Nkansah, disclosed that the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) informed him of the charge after taking his client into custody.
According to him, Mr Nkansah remains in detention and has not been granted bail.
“I have just left the BNI. They informed me formally that they will arraign him before the court tomorrow by God’s grace. Because of that, they are not granting him bail,” Mr Awuah said on Asempa FM.
The charge stems from allegations made by Mr Nkansah during a discussion on Sompa 106.5 FM, in which he claimed that an individual paid money to secure a government-funded scholarship to study abroad.
The interview subsequently circulated widely across media platforms, drawing significant public attention.
Following the broadcast, President John Dramani Mahama directed the NIB to investigate the claims of alleged impropriety in the award of overseas scholarships.
In a statement dated February 3, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, the Presidency noted that the allegations had generated considerable public interest.
As part of the investigation, NIB officials conducted a search at Mr Nkansah’s residence on before inviting him to assist with enquiries. He was later taken into custody and questioned by investigators.
Mr Awuah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, questioned the continued detention of his client after the charge was filed.
“He has been charged but is still in NIB custody, although he was supposed to be granted bail. How do you detain someone who has been charged with publication of false news?” he asked.
The NIB is yet to issue an official public statement on the matter.
