Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that the National Misinformation and Disinformation Bill is ready to be presented to Parliament for examination in its forthcoming session.

In a media briefing on Thursday, July 3, Mr. George characterized the bill as an essential instrument for protecting Ghana’s digital information environment from the increasing prevalence of falsehoods and harmful online content that jeopardize public trust, national security, and democratic engagement.

"To uphold the integrity of Ghana’s digital information ecosystem, the Ministry is diligently working to submit the National Misinformation and Disinformation Bill to Parliament," he stated.

The proposed legislation seeks to create a definitive legal framework that empowers relevant authorities to address the intentional creation and distribution of false information while ensuring citizens’ rights to free speech are preserved.

"This bill is not designed to silence anyone but rather to offer enforcement clarity and enhance legal safeguards against deliberate disinformation," Mr. George remarked.

He also reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to fostering responsible digital communication, building public trust, and advancing digital literacy.

"Freedom of expression will always be honored, but it is accompanied by the obligation not to mislead," he concluded.
