Chairman of the National Peace Council, Reverend Emmanuel Asante, has urged Ghanaians to show love to the members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) community.

Rev Asante who spoke on Starr FM explained that although their sexual preference is illegal they must not be discriminated against in any way.

“Love homosexuals but hate homosexuality. I believe they can be helped psychologically. We shouldn’t look at them as enemies or beasts. They have rights and are human beings. It’s illegal and we can’t condone it but we can help them,” he advised.

A recent 72-page report, titled 'No Choice but to Deny Who I Am’: Violence and Discrimination against LGBT People in Ghana, documented violence, widespread abuse and discrimination against gays and lesbians living in Ghana.

The report, which was published by Human Rights Watch, a US-based rights advocacy organization, was immediately followed by a petition to the Inspector General of Police seeking for the protection of the human rights of the LGBT community in Ghana.

However, Rev Asante has cautioned the government not to bow to pressure from the international world to relax rules against them.

“I’ll urge the government not to give in to international pressure that will bring in things of this nature. The religious bodies should hence strengthen their evangelism.”
