President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a fleet of pickup trucks, buses, and land cruisers for the Ghana Armed Forces to enhance mobility and operational efficiency, with the delivery representing the first phase of vehicles the military is expected to receive.
The President announced on Friday during the West African Soldiers’ Social Activity (WASSA) at Burma Camp, noting that he had commissioned the vehicles moments before the event commenced.
“Just a few minutes ago, I commissioned a fleet of pickup trucks, buses, and land cruisers to enhance mobility and operational efficiency of the Ghana Armed Forces. This is just the first phase of vehicles that the Armed Forces are to receive,” President Mahama stated.
The vehicle commissioning forms part of a broader modernization drive being pursued by government in collaboration with the military command, aimed at retooling all the services of the Armed Forces to meet both current and future challenges.
The delivery addresses longstanding mobility challenges faced by military personnel in executing their constitutional mandate across the country.

The commissioning comes as government prepares to complete forward operating bases in strategic locations, with the enhanced mobility expected to support rapid deployment and response capabilities at these facilities.
President Mahama described WASSA as more than a social gathering, calling it a symbol of unity, esprit de corps, and the enduring values of professionalism, discipline, and loyalty that define the Ghana Armed Forces.
He commended the Armed Forces for maintaining Ghana as a beacon of stability and democratic resilience in a sub-region facing complex and evolving security challenges, attributing this position to the professionalism, discipline, and sacrifice of military personnel.
The President noted that the strength of any armed force lies in the professionalism, welfare, and motivation of its personnel, reaffirming his commitment as Commander-in-Chief to ensure that the Ghana Armed Forces are adequately resourced, well-trained, and properly equipped.

Beyond the vehicle fleet, government is advancing plans to procure armored personnel carriers, strategic drones, and advanced communication systems as part of the retooling effort across all military services.
The modernization programme also includes the establishment of Ghana’s first state-of-the-art cyber and electronic warfare center at the Tamale Air Force Base, which will be responsible for maintaining surveillance of borders and provide assault capacity in the event of attacks on the country.
President Mahama expressed the nation’s gratitude to all officers, soldiers, and defence civilian staff for their dedication to service, urging them to remain disciplined, professional, and loyal in pursuit of their noble calling.
He congratulated all award winners decorated during the event and commended the winners of the Chief of Defense Staff Prize essay competition, while thanking organizers, sponsors, and partners who made WASSA 2025 a success.
