Meningitis Outbreak: 1 dead, 9 hospitalised at Damongo SHS

One student of Damongo Senior High School (SHS) in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region has been confirmed dead and 9 others are currently on admission at the Damongo Government Hospital following a reported outbreak of meningitis.

The deceased person identified as Nantomah Fadila, a first year home economics student from Tamale, collapsed this morning and was rushed to the hospital where she died shortly on admission.

According to reports, other 9 students showed similar signs of the disease and were also rushed to the hospital and are currently responding to treatment.

The District Chief Executive Saeed Muazu Jibreal who confirmed the incident to the journalists disclosed that surveillance has been stepped up on the campus whilst health authorities have equally been notified about the matter.

As reported earlier, some 22 students at the Koforidua Secondary/ Technical school in the Eastern Region have been placed under strict monitoring by health officials after one student died from meningitis.

The male student, whose name has been withheld, died at the Regional Government Hospital in Koforidua on Friday, November 8 after complaining of fever and body pains.
