Ghana Mineworkers union have petitioned Parliament to intervene and stop Goldfields Limited from dismissing 1,500 of their members.

The union believes it is about time Parliament called Goldfields Ghana Limited to order to prevent them from making a move which will affect the livelihood of over thousand workers.

The Deputy General Secretary for the union, Abdul Moomen, speaking in a radio interview explained that there was a need to first alert Parliament to control the situation before resorting to any other means.

"Goldfields wants to pursue a ruthless business option that will lead to loss of jobs of over thousand people. It is a concern to us, and as People's representatives, we ought to be at Parliament to discuss and let them know the extent to which the move will negatively affect people," he said.

He further claimed that the company is using the excuse of contentious figures being circulated as an argument to distract the public from the socioeconomic impact of their decision. However, they believe that after presenting their petition Wednesday, December 14, 2017, government will ensure that the plight of numerous mine workers will be addressed.

The Mineworkers union presented their petition to both the Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu, who assured them they will address their concerns in due time.

Mr. Moomen, however, warned that if Parliament does not as a matter of urgency resolve the issue, they will resort to other remedies under the law such as dragging the company to court.
