The long-awaited Masters' graduation of the Ghana Institute of Journalism has taken place, in spite of government's failure to constitute a governing council.

The congregation has been holed up since February 2017, when it was postponed indefinitely for unexplained reasons. There were suggestions the action was due to the expiration of the mandate of the governing council which has the mandate to confirm the degrees to be conferred.

One-hundred and twelve people, including NDC MP for Odododiodio Nii Lante Vanderpuye graduated with various Master’s degrees including MA in Journalism, MA in Public Relation, MA in Media Management and MA in Development Communication.

46 students graduated with MA in Development Communication,  MA in Public relation, Media Management and Journalism, had 44, 14 and 8 students respectively passing out.

In a speech, Rector of the Institute, Dr Wilberforce S. Dzisah reaffirmed the commitment of the GIJ Graduate School to continue the development of high-quality faculty across the four programmes.

The student population has seen an impressive increase from 99 in the first batch to  243 who are to begin the programs from next academic year starting September.

Dr Dzisah, however, lamented the limited space and infrastructural challenges the school is currently grappling with and the inability to develop a new site due to lack of funds. GHC14 million is required to make the site habitable.

Executive Secretary of the National Council for the Tertiary Education, Prof Muhammad Salifu who chaired the event assured that the governing council would soon be constituted by the government to ensure the effective running of the nation’s premier communication school.
