Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, is trending on Twitter after Ghanaians from all walks of life take to the social media platform to celebrate him on his birthday today.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day has been made a statutory public holiday.

The day which falls on September 21 has been declared a holiday in accordance with Public Holiday Amendment Bill into law in March 2019.

As a leader and advocate of pan-Africanism, he led Ghana to independence in 1957.

From that point, Ghana became this beacon, a symbol of hope for all African countries.

His intellect and determination are admirable. Even though almost every aspect of his policies and philosophy remains under strong controversy, and he was blamed for ‘damaging the democracy and economy in Ghana’, he is still honoured and celebrated in Africa.

His CPP, as part of activities to mark Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day today, has called on Ghanaians to rise above partisan politics and seek the development of the nation.

"There’s no big six. There’s only big one- Dr kwame Nkrumah, the rest are small five ~~ Kwesi Pratt Jnr" one tweet read.

Another said "Dr. Kwame Nkrumah lives in our hearts and minds. The history of our dear country can not be distorted to exalt a few elite. Nkrumah today, Nkrumah forever."

Some tweets sought to compare the happenings in the 4th Republican governments with Nkrumah's era.

"Kwame Nkrumah had only 12 Ministers. The educated and the elite refused to work in Nkrumah's Govt. Some of his ministers were not university graduates. A large percentage of MMDCEs under Nkrumah's government were uneducated. Yet Kwame Nkrumah's achievements are unequaled."
