The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued statutory notices directing developers to explain why their unauthorised structures, including containers erected along Obonu Street in North Kaneshie, should not be altered or demolished.

The notice captioned “Notice for Alteration of Building/Structure” and referenced under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), Section 106, required the recipient identified on the document as “Developer” to submit a written statement to the Metropolitan Chief Executive on or before February 2, 2026.

The notice dated 19th January 2026 indicated that the structures in question were considered “unauthorised” and had been constructed or executed in contravention of Section 106(1) of Act 936, and that the developer was expected to show why the development should not be subjected to enforcement action.

According to the notice, the response was to be made in writing by the developer or an authorised representative and served on the Metropolitan Chief Executive as part of the statutory process.

The AMA stated that a developer who failed to comply could be held responsible for the costs and expenses arising from the alteration works.

The issuance of the notice forms part of the Assembly’s broader enforcement of development control requirements in the capital, as authorities continue to clamp down on unauthorised structures and activities that breach city regulations.
