Parliament has expressed its deepest regrets over the passing of the Ministers of Defence, Environment, and Science and Technology, and 6 others who perished in a helicopter crash on an official assignment to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The development comes on the back of the unfortunate news the whole country was hit with this afternoon when the chopper carrying 5 passengers and 3 crew members from Accra en route to Obuasi crashed and burst into flames and killing all passengers onboard.
In a statement, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and the leadership of the House said they received confirmation of the “tragic passing” with profound sadness.
“Parliament is deeply saddened by this news, and would want to, at this time, express its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and indeed the entire Republic,” the statement read.
The deceased officials include Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and MP Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, among others.
The officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar and crashed.
“May the souls of our departed colleagues who have died in the service of our Republic rest in peace,” Parliament’s statement concluded.
