Police arrest 27 suspects in major anti-drug operation in Northern region

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 27 suspects as part of a nationwide operation to combat drug peddling and related crimes in the Northern Region.

The suspects were arrested on November 19, during coordinated raids at various drug hotspots in and around Tamale.

According to a statement signed by the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lukman Neindow said dried leaves suspected to be cannabis were recovered, packaged in polythene bags, along with five motorbikes believed to have been used in facilitating the illicit activities.

He said the suspects, including Iddrisu Abdul Bassit, Iddrisu Sadick, and Yawuza Hishan, among others, have been handed over to the Northern Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit for further investigations.
Inspector Neindow said.

On November 21, nine suspects, comprising five females and four males, appeared before the Tamale Circuit Court on charges of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.


One additional suspect faced charges of unlawful possession of arms and ammunition. All pleaded not guilty and were granted bail. He said the remaining 18 suspects have been remanded into police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.


The police PRO assured the public of their continued efforts to clamp down on drug-related crimes in the region.


The Inspector General of Police’s special operations team and the Northern police command have launched some operations in recent times to rid the city of criminals.
